Rome. THE city of all cities for centuries way back when, and still one of the greatest cities in the world today. My last trip was less than ideal. I saw lots of churches, tours, tourists, graffiti, garbage, even partook in a political riot with gunshots. Yes I appreciated the history and all the sights, but left Rome feeling like I had a horrible meal at a great restaurant.
Fast forward seven months and I'm back in Rome. Before leaving Maine, I made it a point to soak up as many historical documentaries I could find. Add two excellent cable series, Sparticus and Rome, and I was literally ready to conquer the city.
The hotels I stayed at last time were not in ideal locations. I planned things out for this trip to stay on the total opposite side of the city, right near the old Roman forum and Coliseum. Perfecto...in theory. When I arrived I was told that a pipe had burst in my room, and they had no spare rooms. Their "sister" hotel, however, did have rooms available right near the famous Spanish Steps. Opposite side of the city, which I've already seen, but hey...it could be much much worse. The 600 year old hand painted frescoes on the ceiling of my room are definitely not horrible to look at, although a bit creepy. A steaming hot bath definitely made matters much better. Honestly I can't remember the last time I took a real bath (I do shower daily though...TMI).

Tomorrow the plan is to head to the Coliseum and the forum, do the tours, museums, etc etc. Walking on the same ground as Roman emperors, soldiers and gladiators walked is totally mind blowing. It will be a great day!
